Why This Programme Matters

  • Gain essential knowledge across electronics, computer engineering and robotics.
  • Learn how sensors, actuators and embedded systems operate within integrated technologies.
  • Explore programming, digital-system design and control engineering.
  • Use computer-aided design and simulation software to test engineering ideas.
  • Study robotics, mobile systems and intelligent machine behaviour.
  • Apply your knowledge through team challenges and an individual capstone project.
  • Prepare for diverse roles across engineering, automation, healthcare and technology.

Modern products increasingly depend on mechanical, electronic and digital components operating together. From automated production systems and intelligent vehicles to medical devices and assistive technologies, mechatronic engineers help turn separate technologies into coordinated, responsive systems.

The BEng (Hons) Mechatronic Systems combines engineering theory with practical design and experimentation. You will study electronics, programming, mathematics, embedded systems, robotics and control while using specialist laboratories and industry-standard tools to create, test and evaluate technical solutions.

The BAC College (Singapore) Experience

Established Education

The awarding institution, the University of Essex, delivers the programme through its School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering at the Colchester Campus.

Innovative Teaching

The University uses lectures, laboratory work, assignments and individual and group project activities.

Students in the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering typically attend a two-hour lecture and a two-hour laboratory session for each 15-credit module, supported by substantial practical work.

Personalised Academic Support

Students receive regular feedback through in-term tests, laboratory activities, coursework and project supervision.

During the final-year capstone project, each student reports to an academic tutor and may also receive guidance from a company mentor where an external organisation provides the project brief.

Supportive Learning Environment

Students can access specialist facilities including a robotics gaming laboratory, a robot arena with one of the world’s largest powered laboratory floors and laboratories supporting robotics and brain-computer interfaces.

Available technologies include wheeled and flying robots, robotic fish, intelligent wheelchairs, robotic arms and robotic hands.

Global Progression Opportunities

Students may select a placement year with an external organisation or spend a year abroad at one of the University’s partner institutions.

These routes offer opportunities to gain professional contacts, workplace experience, international exposure and greater confidence while retaining the academic content of the three-year degree.

Recognised Quality

The University reports:

  • 7th for student positivity in engineering in the National Student Survey 2025
  • Access to some of the world’s largest engineering laboratories
  • Top 150 globally and joint 10th in the UK for telecommunications engineering in the Shanghai Ranking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2025
  • Research activity spanning cognitive robotics, agricultural technology, neural engineering and robot-assisted rehabilitation
